How To Handle An Auto Recall; Your Questions Answered.

Q1: What is an auto recall, and why does it happen?

A1: An auto recall is a safety-related action taken by a car manufacturer to address a defect or non-compliance with safety standards in a vehicle. Recalls can occur due to various reasons, such as manufacturing defects, design flaws, or safety concerns discovered after a vehicle is on the market.

Q2: How do I know if my car is part of a recall?

A2: To check if your car is part of a recall, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website or contact your vehicle’s manufacturer. You can also enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on their website to check for any open recalls.

Q3: What should I do if my car is recalled?

A3: If your car is recalled, follow these steps:
– Contact the manufacturer or dealership immediately.
– Schedule an appointment to have the recall issue repaired or replaced.
– Continue to drive your car cautiously until it’s fixed, unless advised otherwise.

Q4: Is the recall repair free of charge?

A4: In most cases, recall repairs are free of charge. Manufacturers are required by law to cover the cost of fixing safety-related defects. However, it’s essential to confirm this with your dealership when scheduling the repair.

Q5: What if my car is no longer under warranty?

A5: Even if your car is out of warranty, recall repairs are typically covered at no cost. Manufacturers are obligated to address safety-related issues regardless of the vehicle’s warranty status.

Q6: Can I choose where to get my recall repair done?

A6: Yes, you can choose where to get your recall repair done. You are not limited to the dealership where you purchased the vehicle. Authorized repair shops and mechanics can also perform recall repairs.

Q7: How long do I have to get my car repaired after a recall is issued?

A7: While there’s no strict deadline, it’s crucial to schedule the recall repair as soon as possible. Delaying the repair could pose safety risks. Manufacturers typically notify affected owners promptly after a recall is issued.

Q8: What if I’ve already paid for a repair related to the recall issue?

A8: If you’ve paid for a repair related to a recall issue before the recall was announced, you may be eligible for a reimbursement. Contact the manufacturer or visit their website to learn about the reimbursement process.

Q9: Are rental cars available during the recall repair process?

A9: Some manufacturers offer rental or loaner vehicles while your car is undergoing a recall repair. Check with the manufacturer or your dealership to see if this option is available to you.
